Last week graduate student Grace Haynes received first prize in the graduate student presentation competition at the North Central Forest Pest Workshop. This annual meeting gathers pathologists, entomologists, foresters, agency personnel, researchers, and students from several universities in Canada and the US. Held this year at the Morton Arboretum in Chicago, Grace presented her work on host screening of velvet longhorned borer, a new invasive insect to Minnesota and Wisconsin. Fellow Aukema lab member Zach Smith placed second in the competition for his presentation on invasion risk of mountain pine beetle to the Great Lakes region.

Congratulations to University of Minnesota graduate students Daniela Pezzini, Michelle Boone, and Julia Brokaw, as well as undergraduate student James Menger who were selected for awards and prestigious positions by the ESA (Entomological Society of America).
Daniela Pezzini was awarded the Larry Larson Graduate Student Award for Leadership in Applied Entomology, which is presented to a student that demonstrates technical knowledge, leadership, and excellent communication skills within the field of applied entomology.
Michelle Boone was awarded the P-IE Master’s Student Achievement in Entomology Award, which recognizes an outstanding master's student for their achievements in research, teaching, and/or outreach in entomology.
Julia Brokaw was selected as a Science Policy Fellow, a two year position where those selected receive training on how to successfully advocate for issues related to entomology by interacting with lawmakers, legislative staff, and Federal agency leaders.
James Menger was awarded the P-IE Undergraduate Student Achievement in Entomology Award, which recognizes undergraduate students who have demonstrated significant achievements through research, teaching and/or outreach in entomology.
